Double Chocolate & Peanut Butter Puppy Chow

Who is up for double chocolate & peanut butter puppy chow? We have been making Chex mix puppy chow for years. The flavor of peanut butter and chocolate and the crunch of the Chex cereal has always been a favorite of our 2 sons. In fact, Sam would take cans of it in to his broadcast club in high school, and they would always ask for more.

Just like with our SPICY RANCH CHEX MIX, we like to make a BIG BATCH of puppy chow.  This way we use up all the Chex cereal, and have enough to snack on, and give away to friends and neighbors. We use chocolate Chex, and peanut butter Chex in this batch, but you can use the plain rice Chex if you want to.

We use both milk chocolate and semi sweet chocolate chips, and cocoa powder for layers of flavor! We divide puppy chow into plastic bags to give as gifts. A 2 cup bag of puppy chow has 4 servings, and is the perfect size to fit into a holiday mug to give as a gift for Christmas!

Ingredients

  • 2 12.8 ounce boxes of Chocolate Chex
  • 1 12.2 ounce box of Peanut Butter Chex
  • 12 ounce bag of semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 12 ounce bag of milk chocolate chips
  • 2 cups smooth peanut butter
  • ¾ cup of butter
  • 3 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup cocoa powder

Instructions

  •
  • This makes a very big batch so start with  a large bowl, and add the 3 boxes of Chex cereal. I like to use a metal mixing bowl, but any bowl will work. Set aside.
  • Add the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter into a large microwavable bowl. I like to use an 8 cup Pyrex bowl with a handle and a spout. It is easy to handle, and pour from. Place bowl in microwave on half power for 4 minutes. Remove, and stir until smooth. If there are still a few lumps, return to microwave on half power for 1 minute.
  • Now it is time to stir in the vanilla. Since the vanilla is a liquid, the chocolate will slightly thicken. At this point, if it gets a little thick, add a few tablespoons of butter, and stir, and heat a bit more if needed.
  • Pour the melted mixture over the cereal, and moving gently, but quickly, using 2 spatulas, stir the cereal and chocolate mixture together. Be sure to fold the cereal underneath over the top to get it all coated. As the mixture cools, you may want to just put on rubber gloves and mix to ensure it is thoroughly coated.
  • Before the mixture cools, add the powder sugar and cocoa powder over the top, and again, using your hands, mix and toss this in the bowl.
  • You can store this mixture in any type of sealed container. I like to measure 2 cups into small sealable plastic bags. To do this I use a wide mouth mason jar funnel, and a bag that sits in a mug. It is so easy!
  • This will make 16 2 cup bags, plus some leftovers for you to snack on! A great snack idea for school or work parties! All individually sealed! And you can add the bag to a cute holiday mug for a gift!
