Greek Seasoning Blend (DIY!)

Are you looking for a DIY homemade version of Greek Seasoning mix? If you’re like us and love Greek cuisine, then this is the seasoning for you. Plus, preparing it yourself means that you can control what ingredients are used. Adjust ingredients to your liking, and know that there is not a lot 0f “filler”! Like it spicier? Add a few dashes of cayenne! For this seasoning blend we do not use any salt. Not because we don’t use salt-we just like to add salt to each dish on our own, so we can control the taste.  Since so much of Greek food has Kalamata olives or feta cheese we rarely use salt while preparing!

What you will need to make this Greek Seasoning Blend:

Garlic Granules: Garlic adds a robust, savory flavor and aroma to Greek seasoning, enhancing the overall taste of dishes.

Onion Powder: Onion powder provides a sweet and slightly pungent onion flavor, contributing depth to the seasoning’s profile.

Basil: Basil imparts a fresh, herbal note that complements the Mediterranean character of Greek cuisine.

Dried Oregano: Oregano is a quintessential Greek herb, offering a strong, earthy flavor that is fundamental to many Greek dishes.

Dried Dill: Dill brings a hint of anise-like flavor and a touch of brightness to Greek seasoning, often used in yogurt-based sauces.

Parsley: Parsley adds a mild, grassy freshness and a burst of green color, enhancing the seasoning’s visual appeal.

Thyme: Thyme contributes earthy, aromatic notes that blend seamlessly with the other herbs and spices in Greek seasoning.

Ground Rosemary: Rosemary brings a robust piney flavor, providing a unique and aromatic dimension to the seasoning.

Marjoram: Marjoram offers a slightly sweet, citrusy, and mild oregano-like flavor, harmonizing well with Greek cuisine.

Chili Flakes: Chili flakes introduce a touch of heat, balancing the seasoning’s flavors and offering a hint of spiciness to dishes.

Dried Lemon Peel: Dried lemon peel provides a zesty, citrusy brightness, enhancing the seasoning with a refreshing tang.

Black Pepper: Black pepper adds a subtle heat and pungency, enhancing the overall complexity of the Greek seasoning’s taste profile.

Greek seasoning is where it’s at. We end up using this in so many of our recipes. We season shrimp for our Greek Shrimp Salad, and add lots of fresh veggies for a tasty dinner. You can sub out the shrimp for chicken for this salad, or even just make with veggies!  If you are looking to create a new pizza on pizza night, this Smoked Greek Pizza will wow your family!

Our Top 10 Staples in Greek Cooking:

  1. Olive oil: Greece is one of the largest producers of olive oil in the world, and it is a staple ingredient in Greek cuisine.
  2. Feta cheese:This salty, tangy cheese is made from sheep’s milk and is often used in salads, dips, and as a topping for dishes.Welove using Feta on salads, pizza, and ground lamb bowls.
  3. Yogurt: Greek yogurt is a thick, creamy yogurt that is often used as a base for dips and sauces. We love using it to marinate meat.
  4. Lemon: Fresh lemon juice is used to add a bright, acidic flavor to many Greek dishes, from salads to soups to grilled meats. It, along with olive oil are the 2 ingredients in our Greek Salad Dressing.
  5. Garlic: Garlic is a common ingredient in Greek cooking, adding a pungent, savory flavor to many dishes. Roasting garlic will bring it’s sharp edge down to a mellow, almost sweet flavor.
  6. Oregano: This herb is commonly used in Greek cuisine to flavor meats, vegetables, and salads, and can be used fresh or dried. We grow this herb every summer in our herb garden.
  7. Dill: Dill is another herb that is frequently used in Greek cooking, especially in seafood dishes and dips. We love fresh dill, and grow it in the Summer, but we always have dried dill on hand.
  8. Eggplant: This versatile vegetable is often used in Greek dishes. We feature it in our Crispy Eggplant Parmisan Stacks, with Italian seasoning, but simply swap out Greek Seasoning, and use a little feta instead of mozzarella, and it will have a Greek flavor!
  9. Tomatoes:Fresh tomatoes are a staple ingredient in Greek salads, stuffed Greek Peppers, and roasted to serve with grilled meats. Summer tomatoes are the best, but cherry tomatoes from the store are wonderful year round.
  10. Kalamata olives: These dark purple olives are absolutely essential in our Greek recipes. We always have a few jars in the pantry. When we get the opportunity to buy them fresh from a market, we buy enough for the week!

Simple ingredients, delicious flavor….

This seasoning will maintain its freshness when stored in an airtight container for up to six months. Properly sealing it in an airtight container helps prevent exposure to air and moisture, which can cause spices and seasonings to lose their flavor and aroma over time. By following this storage recommendation, you can ensure that your seasoning retains its optimal taste and quality for an extended period.
